In this short history, we will not go into determining when it began, or in what form passenger transport was carried out in the city of Reus before the 20th century, therefore we will not make references to the 19th century and previous centuries, as it would be too much pretentious on our part, if we want to go into these aspects, we will not investigate the beginnings in Reus of the transport of small groups of travelers, where they are the ones who determine the destination in exchange for certain fees, due to lack of up-to-date of today's relevant documentation that provides us with data on this subject, nor the vehicles used in the city of Reus, such as the small stagecoaches or animal-drawn carriages that were used as passenger transport before the 20th century.
In Catalonia, it is recorded that the first city to use taxi services, as we understand them today, is Barcelona, and it was created around 1906, coinciding with Madrid in the rest of Spain.
The taxi service in the city of Reus developed, starting in the 1920s, like other important cities in the rest of Spain and throughout Europe, so it can be said that the city of Reus is a pioneer in this sense, saving the differences in the number of vehicles destined for these tasks, and adapting to the size of the city and the need it required at that time.
The advancement of new technologies and social changes characteristic of the second industrial revolution and above all the invention and subsequent generalization of the internal combustion vehicle, allowed a series of new trades, and among them the development of the taxi service in the most prosperous and influential cities in Catalonia and the rest of Europe, and in this sense the city of Reus has always been a city with a lot of influence and an important development at all levels, whether commercial or industrial, therefore it is a logical and necessary movement of the time the implementation of a taxi service at the beginning of the 20th century in the city of Reus, coinciding with many capitals of the Spanish State.
We can therefore determine that the city of Reus has a wide and extensive history linked to the taxi service, before the formation of the Local Guild of Taxi drivers of Reus, which happened in 1948, although this in the beginning and until the formalization of the Reus taxi drivers' union, they worked independently and not as coordinated as at present.
Subsequently, the Local Guild of Taxi Drivers of Reus was officially renamed in 1961 as the Reus Taxi Service Association, an organization that is still active today, and which shares with the founders the spirit of service to the city of Reus and its inhabitants, visitors and tourists.
We have evidence of a truly rooted and perfectly functioning taxi service in the city of Reus, at the beginning of the 1920s and it is from this time that we have documents that attest to how this service was developed in its beginnings.
The first stop that is recorded, where all the vehicles intended for the taxi service were waiting for their customers, is in the central Plaça Prim. This square has always been a central and focal point of life in Reus, both because of its central location and because of its history. It was therefore the ideal point for the location of the taxis, as it allowed quick access from anywhere in the city.
The vehicles in those years, initially in Reus, were not required to wear any badge or particular color, in any case all the vehicles were dark or black in color, also due to the restricted market of available models, and which met the technical particularities to be able to provide the service with guarantees of profitability, effectiveness and quality.
The most used vehicle models until the 1930s were Fiat, Hispano Suiza, Citroën, Renault and Peugeot, although there were other minority manufacturers, some of which can be seen in the previous photo. One of the models that can be seen is the Citroën B14, a vehicle model widely used around Europe at the beginning of the 20th century for the taxi service.
Later on in the 1930s, in Reus it was regulated that all vehicles were black and with a red rose as a symbol of the city.
The rose as a symbol of the city dates back to the 14th century, therefore the taxi drivers of Reus with the consent and approval of the competent authorities of the time, at the Reus City Council adopted it as an unequivocal symbol of the city, placing it on the front doors of the vehicles, as has been done to this day.
